Building Custom Model Ships

There is a great deal of work that goes into building custom
model ships. It takes a master craftsperson to construct a high
quality custom ship. Custom model ships are not ships just made
from kits, nor are they mass-produced. These are model ships
that are not constructed until requested. They can be made from
blueprints on file with the model builder, or they can be
designed from photographs or drawings. They are handcrafted, not
made by machine, and carry fine and exquisite detailing that
cannot be duplicated by the decals that come in so many kits.

When custom model ships are built, there are hundreds to
thousands of hours invested in making the ship specific to the
desires of the builder or the customer (for whom the builder is
working). There is more than one step in the process of
constructing custom model ships, a good craftsman sees that each
receives due consideration in order to create ships of the
finest quality.

The first thing that needs to be done when building custom model
ships is research. Research is immensely important because it
allows the builder to determine details such as size,
measurements, features, colors, and other important
considerations. Research can be done by looking at photos and
drawings, or reading descriptions. If a customer requires
certain characteristics, or has special requests, these are
learned about and handled in the same way as other research.

Next, it is important to do some sketching and modeling. The
builder should determine how to build each of the custom model
ships, and take care to know where each piece will go. Sketches
can help with this, as can rough models made from other
materials. Many use 3-D computer modeling to more effectively
determine proper placement.

After the modeling is done, it is necessary to construct the
components of the custom model ships. This means making all of
the pieces and preparing them for assembly. It is possible to
paint the pieces at this time, in order to ensure a nicer
looking product. When all of the components have been made, then
it is time to put them together. This requires patience and
precision, and may require some adjustments if measurements were
not perfectly correct.

Finally, after assembly, each of the custom model ships is ready
to be inspected for quality, accuracy, and attention to customer
requests. If all meets muster, the custom model ships can then
be properly taken to their new owners.
