Wood Ship Modeling Article

Types of Wood Model Ship

Just as there are many different types of model ships, there are
also a variety of styles when it comes to the wood model ship.
This is because for centuries there have been sailing vessels,
and it is true that they have been mostly made of wood. While it
is possible to make a wood model ship portraying a steel ship
(after all, one only needs the right color of paint to get the
proper look) it looks especially elegant to build a beautiful
tall ship, schooner or yacht using wood. The least expensive
type of wood model ship is the kind that comes from a kit and is
made with cheap materials. This is often simple pressboard, not
very sturdy, and while ships made from this material may look
passable, they rarely look really good. This is also the least
valuable type of wood model ship. However, if one is just
beginning in the hobby of constructing model ships, these types
of ships make excellent works to learn upon and to begin gaining
in proficiency.

It is also possible to buy kits from which to build a wood model
ship that include different types of wood, such as pine,
mahogany, or oak. These wood types can make for very elegant
looking ships. Schooners and warships of the Renaissance look
especially becoming when built from kits that make use of these
more beautiful wood types. Additionally, such a model is more
valuable and can be sold put together for a tidy profit.

Finally, it is possible to build a wood model ship without using
a kit. Those who design and carve and shape and put together
these ships from scratch are true artisans. They put many hours
of research into the design, poring over pictures and ensuring
that each detail is just right. Then all of the pieces are
shaped, sanded, and finished with loving care and then assembled
into the final, beautiful product. This type of wood model ship
is highly prized and can be worth thousands of dollars. And if
the detail is especially fine, and the work of very high
quality, they can be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Because there are various ways to construct model ships, it is
possible to find virtually anything you want. No matter which
type of wood model ship you prefer to build, or that your skill
allows you to build, you can enjoy a great hobby by constructing
wood model ships.
